The Estate
Located in Sauternais, in the heart of the Barsac appellation, Château Coutet dates back to medieval times. This 13th century fortress today offers an unchanged appearance with its square tower typical of the military architecture of the time. Today, the estate is managed by the Baly Family in partnership with the Baron Philippe de Rothschild Company. A bit of etymology: in Gascon, the word coutet means a knife, a wonderful summary of the estate's wines which are sharp and lively, nervous and fresh.
The terroir
Located in the heart of the Golden Triangle characterized by the Garonne River to the West, the Ciron River to the East and the Landes Forest to the South, the Barsac terroir benefits from an oceanic influence. Persistent mists awaken in the morning and promote the development of Botrytis Cinerea, this noble rot essential for the creation of sweet white wines such as Sauternes. Then the mist evaporates to give way to warmth, promoting the concentration of sugars. The soils of this exceptional terroir are clay-limestone.
The grape variety
The Sémillon grape variety is very productive and its berries have thin skin to allow noble rot to develop. It is THE grape variety of Sauternes and it is in this appellation that it best expresses its characteristics. Blended with Sauvignon Blanc, it is the source of great sweet wines.
The wine
Château Coutet, Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 is a magnificent ambassador of the Barsac appellation. Dressed in a beautiful gold color, this half-bottle of Château Coutet reveals a very beautiful concentration of aromas of ripe exotic fruits and citrus fruits, vanilla with a very refined floral note. The palate is perfectly balanced between power, freshness and finesse. The finish is dense and rich. This wine will keep its promise to keep for several decades. To be enjoyed with a carpaccio of scallops.
Dare to try wine in half bottles!
