What is Macvin du Jura?

Oct 20, 2024

Macvin du Jura is an AOC liqueur wine produced in the Jura region of France.

It is made from a blend of grape must and grape marc brandy from the Jura, in a proportion of one third brandy to two thirds must. This manufacturing method, which dates back to the 14th century, makes it possible to stop the alcoholic fermentation of the must.

The macvin is then aged for at least 12 months in oak barrels, which gives it its complex aromas of dried fruits, spices and honey.

It can be produced in white from the Chardonnay and Savagnin grape varieties, or in red from the Pinot Noir, Poulsard and Trousseau grape varieties.

Jura Macvin is the only AOC liqueur wine to be made from grape marc brandy rather than wine.
Its alcohol content must be between 16 and 22% vol.

So in summary, macvin is a wine specialty of the Jura, a unique liqueur wine, made from a blend of must and marc brandy.
