The Estate
It was in Ampuis that the emblematic Domaine Guigal was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal. This small village located in the Rhône department, between hills and rivers, is the birthplace of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. In 1995, Maison Guigal acquired a former stately home: the famous Château d'Ampuis, whose history is entirely linked to the Côte-Rôtie appellation. In 2017, a new step in the history of Domaine Guigal with the acquisition of Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, thus allowing it to establish itself in the South of the Rhône Valley. Today, Philippe Guigal, accompanied by his wife Eve, represent the third generation and work passionately to serve the most beautiful appellations of the Rhône Valley.
The terroir
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard of Maison E. Guigal is around fifty years old and the rolled pebble soils rich in red clay store the heat of the Provence sun to release it at night, thus allowing the berries to ripen perfectly.
The grape variety
Grenache noir is the main grape variety of the great Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. It gives power and generosity to the red wine. Mourvèdre needs a lot of sun to ripen, it reveals aromas of spices and black fruits. Syrah produces clusters with bluish black berries, it is fragile and needs soils rich in trace elements to flourish. The careful selection and blending carried out by Marcel and Philippe Guigal magnify the consistency and excellence of the Maison's wines, an indisputable reference in the great Rhône appellations.
The wine
Its dress is a beautiful dark red color and the nose reveals aromas of spices and small ripe red fruits with a hint of jam. The palate is complex and powerful with aromas of plums. This Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Maison E. Guigal is a rich and creamy wine that is very balanced and harmonious. It will pair wonderfully with game birds, red meat and most cheeses.
